Coastal Dragons Rugby
Teaching student athletes to love rugby

The Coastal Dragons aim to introduce the great sport of rugby to all the student athletes that live and go to school in or around Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-sea, Leucadia, and Olivenhain.
Our club was established in 2009 and is one of the largest youth rugby clubs in the United States with team from U8 coed all the way through U18 girls and U18 boys teams. Many of our players have gone on to play and coach rugby at high-schools around San Diego, including La Costa Canyon, San Marcos, Carlsbad, Santa Fe Christian and San Dieguito Academy.
Coastal Dragons is the proud host for the Encinitas 7s — a premier sevens tournament held during the month of June.
Coastal Dragons is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

How it started
The Coastal Dragons was established in 2009 by a handful enterprising ruggers, who wanted a local team in Encinitas. Many of these fathers had played rugby and wanted to share their love for the game and the culture of rugby with their sons and their community. Rugby culture is one steeped in respect, hard work, humility and sportsmanship; all valuable lessons for student athletes, which will help them develop into production young men and woman
The first practice was held at Moonlight beach in November 2009, and was attended by 30 youngsters eager to try the new sport. The word spread quickly, and that year the Dragons registered over 50 players. Today the club has grown to over 300 players per year registering to play rugby from U8 to U18, both boys and girls.

Boys/Girls, 5-18 years old
Coastal Dragons is one of the biggest youth rugby club with over 300 players registering every year. We are proud to be one of the few clubs that are fielding a team in every youth divisions:
-
Co-ed U8, U10, U12
-
Boys BU14, BU16, BU18
-
Girls GU14, GU16, GU18
Girls rugby is growing
In the summer of 2015 we started our first girls team with 5 girls playing in our 7s tournament. Now the girls program see over 60 registered players per year. With girls rugby being a recognized NCAA sport in college and debuting of rugby in the Olympics Games in Rio 2016, more girls are wanting to give rugby a try.
Coastal Dragon Girls offer specific training and programming to grow and develop each athlete to become a better leader, communicator, team player, and contributor as they enter society as an adult. However; our foremost mission is to “Teach Student Athletes to Love Rugby.” With a program that encourages a student-centered approach, the girls can lead to developing skills in their own education, development, and self-reflection.
